Agriculture Adjustment Administration
In the first 100 days after Roosevelt’s inauguration the Agriculture Adjustment Act was created and from this the Agriculture Adjustment Administration was created. The administration was tasked to reduce the amount of food produced.
In Grapes of Wrath, it is explained to the Joads how there are fields that are left fallow. Unfortunately for the starving “Okies” the land is not their property and is guarded from others from farming on it. This doesn’t make any sense to the Joads who would do anything for a means to feed the family and be self-sufficient, instead of looking for handouts and starving.
